Writing Effective AI Prompts

If you choose Write a Prompt when creating a Generative AI post in Hearsay, here are some tips for getting the best results.

Talk to it like it's a person

Conversational language comes more naturally to people, and describing what you want in a conversational way generally leads to clearer instructions from you and more useful results from the AI engine. It’s okay if it isn't short and concise, word count doesn't matter here. Just write how you would talk.

Example: Write a LinkedIn post about how to get a mortgage in 2024 if you don't have a very big down payment saved up.

Provide a point-of view

Providing a point-of-view helps to add in a lot of additional context without having to write it all down.

Example: You are an insurance agent specializing in homeowners insurance. Write a short social media post about the importance of checking your homeowners policy each year when it renews.

Define parameters and constraints

Specify things that are required or that should not be included in the result.

Example: You are an insurance agent. Write a social media post describing the differences between liability auto coverage and comprehensive auto coverage for the state of New York. Do not include information about personal injury protection or motorcycle insurance.

Give lots of details

To get the most relevant results, provide a lot of information up front. The more details you provide, the more tailored and useful the response will be. Here are somethings you might want to include:

  • Background information
  • General tone of the post
  • Target location, audience, industry, etc
  • Examples, if you have any
  • Things to highlight

Example: You are a mid-level Financial Advisor. Write a long LinkedIn post about how you recently relocated to Seattle and took a job at ABC firm. Include information about how excited you are about the pacific northwest and mention hiking with your dog as your new hobby. The post should be for a general professional audience in the greater Seattle metro, perhaps mentioning a Seattle-specific landmark like the Space Needle or the Troll Bridge, and should end in a way that indicates you are open to new clients.

Rephrase and refine

If you aren’t happy with your first result, continue to interact with the engine to find a better result. This could mean completely redoing your prompt, or it could mean continuing the conversation about the existing prompt, such as elaborating on a key point, adding more requirements, or changing the tone.

Example: Rewrite that but with a bigger emphasis on the hiking hobby and slightly less enthusiasm, don't include exclamation points.

Review content for errors, biases, or other AI pitfalls

AI isn't always factually correct and doesn't understand social nuances, so using content without reviewing it first can lead to credibility and compliance issues. When you get your final text, make sure to check it for things like false or fabricated information and discriminatory or biased statements.
